EDITORIAL
by Brian Grainger
:Here we are then, the sixth and last issue of 1999. ICPUG has survived in its electronic form for a year. It does not seem like 12 months since we were working out how to put this E-Journal together. Many thanks to our supporters who read this E-Journal and especially to those who contribute. May it continue to get better in the new millennium.
When I suggested, in the Editorial last time, that I might be living in a fantasy world talking to myself Earl Dallas wrote in to tell me I wasn't. He also provided a couple of review items for this issue of the E-Journal, one on The Psion 5 and the second on Novastor Nova Backup.
Ken Ross is the only other outside contributor. The wide breadth of subjects covered this time include: 8250/8050 disk drives; how to receives faxes as e-mail and GWR Deltic diesel locomotives! Educate yourself now!
As the Judge has given his 'Findings of Fact' ruling in the US DOJ v. Microsoft case I thought it would be useful to summarise the state of play and give my personal views on the case.
The 2nd part of the Windows 95/98 Registry series makes its appearance in the E-Journal and my look at useful software discusses the System Monitor that comes with Windows 95/98. Finally, I thought I would have a look at digital cameras and whether it was worth paying half the price of a low-end PC to own one.
This being the second time that I have used Word 97 as my HTML editor for the E-Journal, I have found more quirks in its use. Quite frankly it has some serious problems. The one I really cannot accept is its knack of combining 2 HTML tags (<BLOCKQUOTE> and <P ALIGN="JUSTIFY">) into one (<BLOCKQUOTE ALIGN="JUSTIFY") that has no meaning! It does this of course without you knowing until you find the page does not look right in the browser. I am now using a combination of
Word 97, FrontPage Express and Wordpad. The latter is harder to use for HTML creation but it does not try to change anything I create!Deadline for the next issue is 21st January 2000. Let's hope our computers survive the Millennium bug.
