MASS HACK ATTACK BEING PREPARED?

Brian Grainger

Here are a couple of news items that are slightly worrying.

They both relate to something happening on the web that may be used to create a mass denial of service attack, or perhaps attack as many computers as possible.

The methods of guarding against this problem are rather drastic. One group says turn off Javascript. If you do that, many web sites you visit just will not render. Javascript is just everywhere.

The second option, from Microsoft, is to incorporate a patch to Internet Explorer. However, they are doing their usual trick of not just supplying the patch, but effectively a whole new version of IE. This means a huge download, which means us on dial-up will not implement it.

Another option is to stop using Internet Explorer / Outlook Express. Perhaps that is the ultimate target of this latest attack. Stop people using Microsoft products.
