GETTING AND SETTING YOUR SERIES 4 PUPPY LINUX SYSTEM, v.4.2.1

Brian Grainger

To run Puppy Linux from your hard drive you need some files taken from the Live CD.

If you already have a Puppy 4.2.1 Live CD then simply follow the last step of Method 1 below, (to copy files to a temporary folder), and the bulleted steps at the bottom of this page.

If you do not have a Puppy 4.2.1 Live CD then you need to get the Puppy .iso file from the Internet. You need to download two files.

These instructions are for Internet Explorer. If you use another browser then use the appropriate commands to download and save a file to disk, rather than download and run. Save the files to a temporary folder.

Right Click HERE and choose 'Save Target As' to download the file:
puppy-4.2.1-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.iso (100.0MB)

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the filename is enclosed in " " marks
i.e. Put "puppy-4.2.1-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.iso" INCLUDING the " " in the Save Target As dialog box

Right Click HERE and choose 'Save Target As' to download the checksum file (71 bytes)

VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the filename is puppy-4.2.1-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.md5 and enclosed in " " marks.
This is the same as the downloaded file with the .txt removed from the end of the filename
i.e. Put "puppy-4.2.1-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.md5" INCLUDING the " "
in the Save Target As dialog box

NOTE:
In the links above I have chosen the best download source for me in the UK. If these are not suitable then go to:
http://www.puppylinux.com/download/index.html
to find alternative download links.

It is very important that you download the two files. The first is the Puppy .iso file for the version you need. The second is a checksum (.md5) file.

The checksum file is not needed by Puppy. It is used to confirm the big .iso file has downloaded without errors. It is wise to confirm this with such a big file.

An MD5 check will be done automatically by using method 2 below.

Now that you have the .iso file it is necessary to extract the files we need. This can be done in two ways.

Method 1 (not recommended for novices)

If you are adept with burning .iso images to a CD and you have a CD writer then you can create the Puppy Live CD. If neither of these conditions apply then go to method 2.

Note that you must BURN THE IMAGE to a CD and NOT copy the file to a CD.

If you have Easy CD Creator installed you may find that double clicking the .iso file in Windows Explorer will start the process. Alternatively, start the process for a Data CD Project. From the File menu select Record CD from CD Image. You can now open the .iso and the process will start. Be sure to reduce the suggested recording speed. I tend to choose half of what is suggested, if possible. I use the Recording Method - Track At Once and Finalise CD.

If you have Nero Smart Start then choose the Copy and Backup option and select Burn Image to Disc. Reduce the recording speed as before.

If you have Nero Burning ROM then from the Recorder menu select Burn Image.

When you have burned the Puppy Live CD copy the following files from the CD to a temporary directory on your hard disk:
initrd.gz ; vmlinuz ; pup_421.sfs.
The filenames on the CD are sometimes in upper case, (CAPITAL letters). Change them to lower case, (small letters), in your temporary directory.

Method 2

This method makes use of a free Windows tool called Isobuster. You can download this tool from: http://www.isobuster.com/isobusterdownload.php . Note that Isobuster comes as a 'paid for' version as well, but the downloaded file is the same. You have to buy a registration key to unlock the 'paid for' functionality. We will not need the 'paid for' functionality.

Having downloaded Isobuster, unzip and install the tool. It is a simple installer. It does not create or modify any files in the Windows directories.

Start the Isobuster tool. It will want to go online to check for a later version. There is no need to do that. Click No to the request to continue?

From the File menu select Open Image File.

You will see a standard 'Open Image File' dialog box. Use the 'Look in' box controls to traverse to the temporary directory where you downloaded the .iso and .md5 files. When you are there, use the 'Files of type' box control to select All files (*.*).You will now see the ISO and MD5 files you downloaded.

Select puppy-4.2.1-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.md5 and click the Open button.

The checksum will now be verified and a progress bar will show how far this job has progressed. When it is complete you will, hopefully, see a message which says:
The checksum matches with the image file
Click the OK button.

If you get a message that the checksum does not match the image file then you have a corruption of the downloaded file. You will need to download the files again.

Assuming the checksum matched the image file you will now see an Explorer-like window with the files in the ISO on the right-hand side. For each of the following files, right click the file and select Extract and save the file to a temporary directory on your hard disk:
initrd.gz ; vmlinuz ; pup_421.sfs.
The filenames in the ISO are sometimes in upper case, (CAPITAL letters). Change them to lower case, (small letters), in your temporary directory.

We now have all the files needed to set up the Puppy Linux system. Carry out the following:

  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Create a new folder in the top (\) folder of the C drive.
  • Name this folder puppy421
  • Move the initrd.gz, vmlinuz and pup_421.sfs files from the temporary folder to the C:\puppy421 folder.

That's the end of Step 3

Click HERE to proceed to Step 4
