EDITORIAL AND WEBMASTER'S WAFFLE

by Brian Grainger: email.gif (183 bytes)brian@grainger1.freeserve.co.uk

It has been an interesting period for me over the last couple of months. The full time employment I had started, which I mentioned last time, has continued beyond the duration of the initial contract. In addition, I have recently had the dreaded toothache and the subsequent period of treatment, which is continuing. This has meant I have found myself with another E-Journal to write for and edit while holding down a job and I have not felt 100% fit either. Well, I failed. When this journal was due to be uploaded I had on my hard disk the start of two articles but they remained unfinished when the deadline appeared. What is worse is that no one, apart from Ken and Gavin, had contributed anything either. I have therefore decided it is time to instigate the 'rolling' schedule.

I had planned to instigate the rolling schedule at some point, as it is more in keeping with the web philosophy and the rest of the site. Basically, it means that there are no strict deadlines. Articles will be published as they appear. When an issue of a journal has achieved 7 articles it will be closed and the next issue started. I am still hoping that issues of the E-Journal will be closed at roughly two monthly intervals and I will give some guideline dates for submission for those that need them.

This time Gavin Haynes writes on the thorny issue of copyright, after being subjected to Internet abuse for supposed violation.

Ken Ross's contribution shows that the impossible sometimes happens - A Mac computer can actually go wrong! Forgive me while I gloat! The story of Ken's travails, along with his usual stuff, can be found on the Problem Page. In addition he writes about how his hard drive was replaced. Ken also produced a short concerning his day trip in Rye.

Although not writing anything himself Alan Crease has gained permission for ICPUG to reproduce an article concerning Bluetooth.

My own two articles finally got completed. The first discusses the value of Standards and looks at where those for text have been and where they are going. Finally, serendipity smiled upon me. In my series on the Registry I showed how it was possible to create a completely blank desktop so that all that was needed was some program to run at start up to provide a fully customised display to ones own choosing. Well, by chance, I have found that program is already built into Windows 9x and it concerns the construction of customised toolbars. My article on File Managers and Toolbars gives the low down.

Those of you planning to submit articles prior to the Christmas festivities should aim to get the stuff to me by November 23rd. Get writing!
