WEBMASTER'S WAFFLE

by Brian Grainger email.gif (183 bytes)brian@grainger1.freeserve.co.uk

Well, the web site is still in its usual format. As I mention in the Editorial I am presently working full time so that is my excuse. (In reality, I just cannot get the urge to sit down for a long time and hack it. It is not something that can be done in little chunks. The initial groundwork will take some time). Whatever else happens, however, I aim to answer e-mails by return and try to get some new items up on the news pages once a week.

Following on from my waffling last time I have now found a case where Word 97 actually erases your text! I had no comments about the use of tables last time and checking with Ken Ross, he had no problems. When it came to edit the articles this time I opened the previous article with Word 97, cut and pasted the new words into the table and saved. All looked OK on screen. However, when I came to view in the browser the words had gone and the table had been redefined. Fortunately, I still had the file I cut and pasted from, or I would have been really angry. I spent an hour trying to find out what was happening as it was. In the end the procedure was remove the table before loading into Word 97 and then add it again, outside of Word, when all the cut and pasting is done. I think I will say officially now that Word 97 is not fit for purpose - It was supposed to edit HTML - it doesn't, it loses it for you! Anybody know of a word processor with the power and ease of use of Word but with the ability to edit HTML! Oh, and preferably does not cost much!

That's it for this time.

Happy Surfing.

Brian
