KEN ABOUT..THE START ?

For those of you have followed (?) my articles in the paper version of the ICPUG journal - well yes, I'm still here. For those of you who've encountered my style of writing for the first time let me fill in a few of the blanks.

I ran the CBM/PET library for ICPUG and a 'new wave C64 ' library as well. The sudden ending of the physical existence of the group has not affected it and has given it a new name: ' Commodore Software Library'. At present the CBM/PET catalog disks are on the website but they are due to be joined by the C64 catalog disks as soon as possible.

There is a diskzine available, named '24-7', that can be supplied on almost any disk format - just send blank disk and return SAE to me at:

26, Redenham House, Tangley Grove, Roehampton, London, SW15 4DW

On the website there is a news & info page that's updated whenever possible about my Commodore activities.

The library is a non profit activity so hence the return SAE ! (end of advert ! )

MAC REPAIR

My LCII had been playing up for a while with what can be described as a ' blinking out and freeze crash'. This seemed to be cured somewhat by pressing down on the edge of the PCB just in front of the HD connector, a temporary mechanical fix that worked for a while but it didn't cure it completely. Gavin Haines found a cure for it while looking through a newsgroup. It was caused by a dry solder joint on the HD connector according to reports. So with much trepidation, (due to poverty if things went badly wrong!), the biscuit tin was taken out and popped open and the soldering iron was warmed up. Taking out the PCB and turning it over gave no visible signs as to the problem. Touching the soldering iron to the pins long enough to remelt the solder - the tops, (or bottom ends as it was turned over), went shiny and I let it cool before moving to the next one. When the LCII was switched on the ' blink out bug' has seemed to have been beaten and I could take another breath....

EXTERNAL THOUGHTS

My existing HD is getting rather full so an external SCSI HD was one thought of an item to get hold of in 99. However, Apple has given us a cheaper way around things. Using Appletalk to link Macs together is easy so I'm saving up to get a cheap 68K Mac, just to use it's HD as an external drive. By setting up the Appletalk software on both machines and then connecting them up the 68K Mac HD will appear on my desktop ready for use. This will also give me a backup system, although with limited RAM. External SCSI HD cases cost roughly the same as the lowest priced S/H 68K Mac if the adverts are to be believed.

My next article will be a lot more Commodore based [while our roots are with Commodore we like articles for any other current machines as well - Brian], but in the meantime why not drop me an e-mail? email.gif (183 bytes) petlibrary@bigfoot.com
