SWIFTER, SAFER, SURFING

29 December 2004

Our Australian correspondent, Paul Blair, writes to say:

G'day to everyone in the UK.

I've just been reading the article about safer surfing, and I'd like to add a line, if I may.

Turn off cookies. For starters, try a total ban.

I loaded up Firefox about 4 weeks ago, and quite like it. At the time, I decided to not allow cookies...and, by and large, my ability to see/read/collect what I want has barely diminished. And Ad-Aware tells me that nothing much that I would regard with suspicion is now getting through.

There are a couple of local sites that I must allow cookies from. Firefox allows me to set those sites as "ok", and they have proven to be benign when it comes to malware etc.

My "test site" is the Timesonline (.org.uk) from London. It constantly bombards my computer with adverts, but nothing gets through. But I can still cruise the news.

Try it for yourself.
