I have just bought a Jamcam 3 on Ebay and unfortunately the software failed to install on Windows XP. There are a number of upgrades/downloads on compgeeks.com under digital imaging. However, I am a complete novice with this sort of thing.

Although I downloaded the upgrades ok I can only assume that because the software failed to install properly in Windows XP in the first place. The camera still doesn't work. If you have any advice or hear of any fixes I would be grateful.

After some web searching my response was, (slightly modified here):

Thanks very much for your message. I had a look at compgeeks.com and found the Jamcam driver update for Windows XP at:

http://www.compgeeks.com/drivers/JamCam3.exe

and the Jamcam software update at:

http://www.compgeeks.com/drivers/JCAM3FUD.exe

Not having a Jamcam (or Windows XP) means I cannot test these but the driver must be changed first. I guess you just run the JamCam3.exe file after download. There may be some problems however. I found the following thread elsewhere on the web.

Shahzad

I have Jamcam 3.0 digital camera, but its not working on my Windows XP. I need driver for Windows XP.

Julie

I have exactly the same problem. Try going to driverguide.com If you put in search for jamcam3xp, it should bring up a download from Deborah. I have tried this and am still having problems, but it may be my camera. Best of luck!

Dan

I got it to work, the update was messy. I ran the update file, but that didn't work. So I uninstalled the driver. When you reinstall, it won't find the sys file, direct it to c:\cabs. Then it should work.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Now whether the download from Deborah is jamcam3.exe I do not know. Driverguide.com requires registration to use, but they seem legitimate. Dan seems to have the answer. This is the first indication that it IS possible to use Jamcam with Windows XP. Which sys file the driver installation cannot find Dan does not say, but I presume it is a Windows sys file from the standard Windows, which on his machine at least can be found in his c:\cabs directory. It may be worth checking that you have a c:\cabs directory first. On my machine I would point to c:\windows\options\cabs, but then I have Windows 98 and it may be different from XP.

James Campbell replied:

Last night I uninstalled the original software, (but not the update or driver), and reinstalled it. All seem to go without a hitch, (no error messages). However, when I tried to download images from the camera nothing happened, although the software appeared to work. I shall try to uninstall the driver next as per Dans tip and if that doesn't work try uninstalling and reinstalling the whole lot from scratch.

Incidentally Morgan computers:

sell the Jamcam, (alas at less than I paid on Ebay!), and they are sending me a disk with the update software on it. Pretty good service.

I just read your article on the Jamcam 3.0 regarding using it on XP, or not being able to use it as the case may be!!!

I have just had Windows Millennium installed on my PC and have found that the Jamcam won't work on it either. I was just wondering, as u said that the web site is no longer in operation, whether u have been able to find a driver to be able to use the Jamcam, as I have ran out of ideas on what to do!!!

My response was:

Oh dear! Windows Millennium now! I do not think an upgrade to Windows Millennium is a great idea, whether using a Jamcam or not. If you cannot upgrade to XP I think it is better to stay with Windows 95 or 98. Anyway it is done now.

As far as Jamcam is concerned I have been looking around www.compgeeks.com under Digital Cameras and found some information on the Jamcam:

( at http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=KG-JC3S ).

There is a strong implication that the existing software works with Windows Millennium, but they do provide an upgrade to cope with Windows XP. Whether this update:

(at www.compgeeks.com/drivers/JamCam3.exe )

works on Millennium is anybody's guess.

I have tried a quick search on the web for Jamcam and Windows Millennium but have not come up with anything so far.

I have now confirmed that the company who made the JamCam, KB Gear, were liquidated in November 2001. No help is going to come from that area!

At first my JamCam would not work when I upgraded from 98 to Windows XP. But, just on a hunch, I quit trying the USB port and tried the serial port. From then on it has worked just fine. I don't know why, it just does. And, I did not download any additional drivers. I am just using the original drivers that came with the camera.

Hope this helps someone else, because I know how frustrating getting this solved.

I recently bought a "Jamcam" camera and I am very pleased with it for a cheap digital camera. I just hope I am able to buy expandable memory for it. It would not work through the USB port but when I used the serial port it worked first time. I use Windows XP but I used the original software for the camera download.
