ICPUG COMES TO WEB 2.0

Brian Grainger

I expect you all know what Web 2.0 is by now. If you don't, then it is to do with all those social networking activities. Examples are MySpace and Facebook. I've even seen watching TV online as Web 2.0 as well but I am not sure where the social activity is with that. I guess some people regard Web 2.0 as any facility that is not covered by Web 1.0, usually characterised by needing oodles of bandwidth/speed to work. Something which the UK does not have.

So why have I brought this up?

Well, Stephen Croucher, a member of ICPUG in the pre Web 1.0 days has set up a Facebook group for ex-members of ICPUG. He is not sure how to paste a link, but you can find the group easily by searching for the term ICPUG once you've logged in.

Don't expect to find me there at the moment. I am a bit of a luddite when it comes to such activities. While the UK does not support a suitable infrastructure for Web 2.0 I can only see grief for all Web users caused by those who want to make use of Web 2.0 facilities. As more and more people watch TV via the web then the ISPs are going to complain more and more because they have to pay BT for all the extra bandwidth that is not costed for in the Web 1.0 business model. It will all end in tears and set the UK behind the rest of the developed world in web access.
