MICROSOFT CHARGE FOR USE OF FAT

Brian Grainger

Did you know Microsoft had a patent on the FAT filing system? Neither did I.

Just recently, Microsoft announced that it was going to start licensing the use of the FAT filing system, which was used for DOS and for Windows up to and including Windows 95.

What is the point now that most people are moving to Windows XP and NTFS, you may ask? Apparently, manufacturers of items such as digital cameras use the FAT system to store operating software. Microsoft now want their cut of the profit!

It is a sign of the times that the Microsoft revenue streams of Windows and Office may well be drying up if Microsoft have to make money in this way. Alternatively, maybe Microsoft are just trying to squeeze every last drop of money from the market.
