WHO IS MAKING THE MONEY TODAY?

Brian Grainger

It is quite a while since I reported on the relevant fortunes of the IT industry players. However, current quarter figures appeared recently for the major players:

Company

Profits

Profits same quarter

Microsoft

$2.74bn

$2.44bn

Compaq

$44m

-$131m

IBM

$1.2bn

$1.75bn

Sun

-$37m

$136m

As you can see only Microsoft and Compaq are going in the right direction but Compaq is puny by comparison (and have now been taken over by Hewlett Packard).

Despite Microsoft continuing to move forward it was not as much as expected.

In the previous quarter Sun, Microsoft and IBM all reported a reduction in income. Sun had also made a loss of -$99m, so they are not making much money at the moment.

In that quarter Microsoft had made record revenues, due to the release of Windows XP and the Xbox, but they also had a $660m legal bill!
