SALES OF SET-TOP BOXES STALL

Brian Grainger

This was the year when the dominance of the PC was to fall. I even said so myself. However the first indications are that people are not buying dedicated set-top boxes attached to TVs to surf the Internet.

You may have seen the Internet TV selling in your local shops. Going under the Bush name it has an in-built internet connection which you access via Virgin ISP. You can also buy a set-top box to use with an existing TV.

At their inception last August the target was to sell half a million sets within 12 months. Ten months in and the figure is less than half that at 186,000. Some of these are still in the retailers shops as there are only 115,000 active subscribers.

In a bid to sell the surplus stock the prices of the sets have been reduced drastically in the past week. It was announced that items were selling at £45 below cost in order to establish a base number of users. If that is the case there may be a bargain out there for those who want to access the Internet without using a PC!
