I cannot claim authorship for the following joke, see:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/28/kde_4_2_released/comments/

A Windows man, a Linux man and a Mac man walk into a bar... They ask for 3 pints.

The barman gives the Windows man a 90% full glass and charges him £3.50.

The barman gives the Mac guy a full glass, but charges him £8.50.

He then gives the Linux man some barley, hops, a bit of yeast, a glass and a book on brewing beer and tells him to do it himself.

This tickled my chuckle muscle but there is a serious side that could be drawn from this analogy.

You would not expect to go into a pub and be served with free beer. Similarly you cannot go into a shop and expect to be given free operating system software. The outlets for Linux distros are different.

To extend the analogy, lots of little independent brewers have sprung up. They have taken the barley, hops and yeast and brewed lots of different varieties of Linux beers. You like a dark bitter - you got it. You like a pale ale - you got it. You like a beer with a strawberry undertone - you got it. The good thing is that the product is then usually sold at very little, if any, cost. The brewers put a barrel in a public place and you just go out and download some! Well, the analogy has to break down somewhere!

The Free Software Foundation is the software equivalent of CAMRA, (Campaign for Real Ale).

Windows is the software equivalent of lager. It's the most popular beer by far.
The alcohol content makes it feel like a real beer but really it's just tasteless gnat's pee bloated with a lot of fizz to give you wind.
